Nonlinear Refractive Indexes

Postby SeanDuffy » Tue May 01, 2012 10:17 pm

I'm new to this forum and this is my first post, so first of all, I'd just like to say hello to you all!

But now, to the matter at hand. I've been researching materials which display nonlinear refractive indices, in particular materials whose refractive index varies depending upon the intensity of light entering them. As far as I know this happens to due to the Kerr effect, but unfortunately I have been unable to find any information on particular materials which exhibit this phenomena.

Any information would be appreciated, I look forward to hearing from you all! :)

Hello and welcome!
ALL materials exhibit nonlinear properties at high light intensities. Kerr effect is only one (although probably the most known) among many phenomena leading to nonlinear response.
You can read more here: http://www.rp-photonics.com/nonlinear_index.html
and here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonlinear_optics
Measured nonlinear indices of many optical materials are summarized in this paper: http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.39.3337
